The Skills You Need To Succeed At Hotel Revenue Management

Hotel revenue management is an absolutely vital skill which can determine the effectiveness of the other departments in the hotel, and can even affect the very survival of the entire operation. There is no doubt that the hotel industry is one of the most competitive in commerce, as every city provides a great many options for the visiting traveler. The revenue manager has a huge responsibility to everyone else involved in the running of the hotel, and it is a role which demands a high degree of training and expertise.

The role of a revenue manager will be significantly different in different types of hotel. At the most fundamental level, a small unique hotel which simply operates in one location is unlikely to have a dedicated revenue manager. More often than not, it is the proprietor who has responsibility for all aspects of management. In this case, the incentive to perform the task well is as high as it can possibly be, as their entire business livelihood depends upon it. In the large hotel chains, the revenue manager will be a separate entity, who will have responsibility for revenue choices alone.

The most fundamental need of a good hotel revenue manager is to be able to understand the operation of the entire hotel. This is lacking in so many managers who come into the job from a purely academic background, who may have an understanding of economics but will have little understanding of the needs of each department of a busy hotel. The best revenue managers are invariably people who have taken the time and trouble to really understand the workings of every department of the hotel.

This could, of course, be someone from an academic background if they have enough dedication. It is a relatively easy task just to ask some simple questions of the managers in other departments, and formulate conclusions based upon the answers. A good academic manager is likely to start slowly, and then quickly get better as they realize the right questions to ask. If you appoint a revenue manager who has extensive hotel management experience, you can cut short this learning curve.

If you are looking for a career in hotel revenue management, your best bet will be to take a degree course in hospitality management, and then look to work in the different departments of a major hotel. This is a project which will take many years of dedication, and the results will not happen overnight. The degree course can be flexible, now that there are many different types of courses offered by different providers, including online providers. You can keep your existing career while you train for your new one, but do move into the hotel industry as quickly as possible to gain relevant experience, if you want to move into hotel revenue management.
